July 22, 2000. Italian journalist Paola Harris recently spent some time with Richard Hoagland and asked Richard to share with UFO Disclosure his theories regarding what Richard says is "an ancient Flying Saucer" found in one of the Mars images recently released by Malin Space Sciences. Richard supplied this image to us to illustrate his ideas. There is also this image at Richard's site. Following is Paola's interview transcribed by John Colaw.
UFO Disclosure interview - Richard Hoagland by Paola Harris
Paola Harris: Tell us about this exciting image, Richard.
Richard Hoagland: It is an enlargement of part of the frame that was taken last year sometime, I am not sure when. This is the frame #AB108505. Go to the Malin site and click on it and you'll find this raw frame. We've done an enlargement, an enhancement.
You can see that it's an oval. It measures on this scale about 3000 feet long. It's got a central dorsal fin, it's got windows in the front and a V-shaped prow. The windows - we just measured them on the order of 30 feet wide and about 120 feet high, which would make a wonderful view.
This thing is sitting in one of the back canyons of the Valles Marineris canyon system on Mars. And it is our supposition that it was meant to be a tourist craft. We're looking at a former human civilization on Mars, and we can extrapolate from what humans do on Earth and we're confronted with a very spectacular view with the canyons on Mars, which are as wide as the United States is long. A very spectacular view. You can imagine there would be tourism, and they would have ships that would take people at a low altitude - maybe a mile or two above the canyons, a several days excursion. You could hold a lot of people in a ship that's 3000 feet long.
And here you see a close-up of the engines, which are definite geometric protuberances on the back, in line with the symmetry axis of the whole craft. Here is a negative view, light is dark and dark is light, and you can definitely see the front and you can see the windows here. In fact there appear to be windows all the way around this very symmetrical, curved fluted rim, which is hanging over this cliff which appears to be the berth or the hull part of this craft used to basically pick up and convey tourists in our model over the canyons of Mars.
Well the only way to tell
if this model is true is to go to Mars with spacecraft, land on the top,
there's a lot of room because you've got 3000 feet, and go inside. And
all that takes is money.
Paola: Okay, a question though. Will we get any more chances to look at this? Is there any way we can ask them to photograph it from another view or land something? You had talked about actually landing something on it.
Richard: We'd have to and another spacecraft. If we took another picture of this it would look the same. This has been sitting there for probably at least several hundred thousand years if not several million, based on the amount of erosions that we see.
If you look carefully you can actually see that there appeared to be carvings in the surface. It's not a smooth surface, it appears to have pitting, and there appears to be an edge here, like you're looking inside. Like the sand, which is whipped by up to 300 mph winds on Mars, is eventually wearing this thing away.
What's amazing is how well preserved it is. Because it's sitting up in one of these canyons, and the canyons are where the winds really can't get going and sandblast or engrave the surface. It's remarkable this photograph was "A" - taken and "B" - as well preserved as it is.
Paola: You also mentioned that it could be some kind of installation, some kind of...
Richard: Well look at the the Alps, for instance. There all kinds of tourist attractions... there's all kinds of hotels and restaurants, observation decks and all that. Well, human beings, Egad, if we're looking at a former human civilization, which is very much what I think we're looking at, then it's very very old and it's predated our civilization.
Richard: In fact, if these are the guys who came to populate Earth then you can extrapolate the psychology of these human beings to what we're seeing in these images. Since this is part, and I use this term very specifically, then the most strategic place to go survey these canyons on Mars. The obvious allusion is to these windows, these amazing windows.
If you look up the axis you see the front of this aligns perfectly with the axis of the entire craft. So these windows which are at a minimum 30 feet wide and 120 feet high would mack one heck of a view for people waiting or standing or dancing or dining or any of the many things that human beings do when they go for cruises.
Paola: A 30 foot wide window? Okay, this particular image though, you have worked on. I am testimony to that, you worked on it and worked on it. I don't know if people understand how much you work with the images of Mars. You spend a lot of time in this room.
Richard: Yes. But the view is pretty outside, too. You've got the Mexico desert.
Paola: The images that are on the Enterprise Mission are images that you have studied and analyzed in depth.
Richard: Well you have to look at the raw data. You have to decide if there is anything worthwhile to go looking at more closely. And we have a lot of computers that I use to do some of the processing. We have this one, and a program called maximum, for resolution, and we take it from this computer to this computer. We do more work with it, like photoshop, and prepare it for publication or display on the web. And there's a lot of work that goes into...
Paola: Something like this, which is a very clear picture.
Richard: Yes. If you'll look carefully you can see that these windows are very regularly spaced, except there's a gap. But if you look carefully, you'll see there's part of one missing out from behind, on this side and part of this side. And there appears to be a debris flow, meaning material is eroding and cascading from the curved top of this craft, down vertically. There in the picture, a stream of debris, and some of it is hanging in front of the window and it's obscuring the view of the windows behind it.
Paola: Okay. And that means that it's been there for some time.
Richard: A long time. When you actually do the work and you look at the subtle details, you can see that it's old. And it's in a place on Mars where it is somewhat protected. Therefore ot would be an extraordinary target to land on and go in. Because inside there could be all kinds of things preserved. It would be like diving on the Titanic and bringing up the jewels or the original furnishings, except underwater on Earth bacteria and sea life eat organic things. On Mars, because there's been no oxygen in the atmosphere for millions of years, there should be extremely good preservation if things are behind walls.
So this is like a time capsule. This would be an extraordinary target for a mission. In fact, in the NASA conference just passed, there were discussions on how to land on targets smaller than this. So the technology exists, all that is lacking is the will.
Paola: Can I ask you, do you think that NASA knows this?
Richard: They took the pictures didn't they?
Paola: One of how many pictures?
Richard: 27,500 so far they've released.
Paola: So they are well aware of this?
Richard: Well if you look at where this was placed in the frame, you can see that this was not an accident shot. That they had to pretty much know, given that its relatively small compared to the width of the frame. and the number, millions of square miles on the Martian surface. no, this was targeted.
The only question is did
they know exactly what they were targeting, or did they simply have a set
of coordinates from some ancient record or source? That there was something
interesting to go photograph? And they did, and they put it out and this
is what it is.
